In addition to the farmers' market, Louise’s Granola is available for online ordering. “We can see them coming across the park.” Through sampling at the Tower Grove Farmers' Market, Louise’s Granola has earned a following. “It’s something that a lot of people are really passionate about not just us, but the people who are customers now, come back for it first thing in the morning,” Collum says. Louisans have: “Lots of dads, I feel like, say they don’t like granola, and then they try it and they’re like, ‘OK, I’m eating the whole bag,’” says Scifres. The base of the granola is made with molasses and local honey, giving it a sweetness that Scifres describes as “pretty unique.”Īlready, many St. Scifres prefers it with Greek yogurt, Amanda eats hers on a smoothie, and Collum snacks on it straight from the bag. It makes food more filling, the company's founders say, and can be eaten any number of ways. Amanda, who's a dietitian, notes the granola's nutrient density but emphasizes that nutrition isn’t the only selling point. That the granola is tasty and relatively healthy doesn’t hurt, either. “She’s always been serving others her whole life," says Amanda. "The neighbors, her seven kids, her husband, so we want to do this to show her that that means something.” “We really wanted to make her feel special and honor her, because she’s done that our whole lives,” says Scifres, adding that's why they named the brand after their mother. Finally, earlier this year, they launched the business, named for Amanda's and Scifres' mother. Then the pandemic hit, and the project was put on hold. The company's co-founders started working to create the small business in January 2020. When Amanda went off to college, it was still a staple-even among friends. “We would take bags of it to college, and our friends would try it and be like, 'Where can I buy this?’” she adds. “When it was done, we would pick some off the and eat it while it was hot.” “She’s been making it forever. She’ll batch-make it for us and our siblings and just spread it all over the counters when we were younger, taking up all this space,” recalls Amanda Zitting, Louise's daughter and one of the brand's three co-founders, alongside her sister Leona Scifres and partner Joe Collum.
